Tibet Cannot Be Saved

Okay, I get it, China invaded Tibet in 1951 and Tibetans want their country back. But on a scale of global atrocities, which include the Rwandan Genocide where 800 thousand people were slaughtered in a six month period or the current war in Darfur where at least 200 thousand people have been slain, I’d say the Tibetans have it pretty good.

Over the last few weeks, the Tibetans have staged various protests that have included extinguishing the Olympic torch, hanging signs off the Golden Gate Bridge, and attacking political leaders. Of course the one fundamental problem with all their protests is that the international community, in particular the United States will never fully support a Free Tibet.

Last year the United States imported 387 Billion worth of goods from China but they only bought 65 billion worth of our goods. Meaning we like their flat screens but they don’t like our Ford Focus. As a result China has 800 billion of our George Washingtons’. And if they get rid of them, the value of our dollar will decline. But if they hold onto them, our dollar is worth more, meaning we can buy more Chinese goods like the computer you’re reading this post on. Which in turn means the United State’s economic stability is not just tied to China but beholden to it.

So unfortunately for Tibet, they are nothing more than China’s abused girlfriend that we are helpless to protect. Sure we see her getting hit, but if we step in and say something, then daddy is going to take away our allowance.
