The Kentucky Derby Winner Is. . .
For the most part, every guy who is into betting on horses had an uncle who took him to the track and taught him how to handicap a race, I am no exception.
My uncle first taught me how to read a racing form when I was a little kid, and since then it’s been a healthy addiction.
Since tomorrow marks the running of the 134th Kentucky Derby, I thought that I’d briefly breakdown the race and make my prediction known.
Don’t be fooled by the early favorites Big Brown and Colonel John. Big Brown is a great and powerful horse, but the problem is that he has a starting position of 20, meaning that he has to start way on the outside of the track and that in order for him to win he’s going to have to cover twice the distance of the other horses and come all the way to the inside of the track to win. Which is not likely.
The other favorite is Colonel John who is also a good horse but in every race that he’s been in he’s stumbled at the gate and then had to come from behind to win. Normally that can work, but there are 20 horses tomorrow and Colonel John would have to weave his way through 19 of them which is like trying to go 90mph through rush hour traffic — it aint going to happen.
Which leads me to my selection. I like the 12 horse, Smooth Air, He just ran against Big Brown in the Florida Derby and just came in second. He has a lot of late speed, which means that toward the end of the race he’ll run faster. Also the 12 position is in the middle of the pack which gives him the opportunity to break out and run the distance.
