They stuffed themselves in car trunks, trekked through the high desert in 120-degree heat. Some died. Some didn’t make it. Others were killed by the coyotes they trusted to bring them across the border.
Death was the risk they took.
And every year 400 thousand illegal immigrants take the same risk when they try to cross the border from Mexico to the United States.
They cross to escape poverty. To create a better life than the life they left behind. It’s the lure of America. The dream that keeps our country going. The foundation our greatness was built on.
But over the next two weeks the Federal Government hopes that over 500 thousand illegal immigrants who have no criminal history and pose no threat to the community will turn themselves in and leave the country voluntarily. It’s being called the “Scheduled Departure Program.” And so far since the program began a week ago, no one has turned themselves in.
Somehow, this has surprised federal authorities. Somehow this is a shock. Which only leaves me wondering how fucking stupid are we?
