The Week
A lot of things happened this week. A plane crashed in Madrid killing 150 passengers on board. Senator John McCain admitted to owning eight homes. Ricky Martin became the father of two twin boys. And twenty-six cheerleaders needed to be rescued from an elevator after they exceeded the weight limit. But this week’s 365 Award goes to Slick Barry who announced at three in the morning that Senator Joseph Biden would be his running mate for the 2008 Presidential election.
Now Obama doesn’t get the award for choosing Biden. He gets the award for realizing that Saturday is a non-news day. People are sleeping at three in the morning. People don’t read the paper on Saturday. They don’t search the Internet. They don’t sit in front of their TVs and watch CNN. People aren’t even home on Saturday.
Which is exactly why Obama made his most important announcement on Saturday. He doesn’t want the media machine grinding the story down. He doesn’t want this to be the main subject of water cooler conversation. By Monday, this will be old news.
And all those Clinton supporters who are undecided, roughly one in five voters, won’t have a chance to feel slighted that their girl didn’t make the ticket. Because the Democratic Convention starts Tuesday. And the first person up to give a speech, Hilary Clinton.
Wow, Barry — and McCain said you weren’t a politician.
