The Week

A lot of things happened this week. The Philadelphia Phillies won The World Series. Halloween came and went. And Sarah Palin announced that she’s in national politics to stay. But this week’s 365 Award goes to Tysheem Brown.

Besides having a dysfunctional name that she probably can’t even spell, Tysheema drove 16 hours, across 7 states, from George to Lincoln, Nebraska so she could abandon her 12-year-old son at a local hospital. Brown was taking advantage of a Nebraska law that allows parents of unwanted children as old as 18 to be left at a safe haven. The law provides that parents will not be prosecuted.

Nebraska was the last state to enact a law that intended to prevent parents from abandoning or killing unwanted newborns. But since the law took effect in July, over 50 children, including one 17 year old boy, have been abandoned by their parents. So far, not one newborn has been brought to a safe haven.

As one of my friends said, now we just need a law that allows husbands to legally abandon their wives.
