Do You Know All The Words?
When I was in elementary school, I used to have to recite The Pledge of Allegiance every morning before class.
For the first time in 20 years, I tried to recite it today. I got as far as this, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of The United States of America. . .” Sadly, that was all I could remember.
Which is especially pathetic considering that today is Veteran’s Day. The one day of the year that we honor those who have fought and those who continue to fight for our country.
So in honor of our vets and in honor of our country, I’ve decided to take the day off, yet again, and stay home.
I’ve made the American Flag my screen saver, saluted it, fired off the 21 guns, made an apple pie, and downloaded the full text of The Pledge of Allegiance.
I almost have it memorized, but there’s one word that keeps tripping me up, “indivisible.”
Maybe it’s a freudian slip. I’ve seen too many maps of red states and blue states.
But who knows, maybe next year, I’ll be a better American.
