And Then There Was One

the_end.jpg When I was in college I used to perform stand-up comedy at clubs throughout New York City. I didn’t think that I was very good but my one claim to fame was that I opened for Dave Chappelle.

Of course this was Dave Chappelle before he was Dave Chappelle and so somewhere along the line, I decided to quit because the idea of spending the rest of my life on a stage performing for people in some rundown ski lodge in the Pocono Mountains didn’t appeal to me.

But as is often the case when you start something for one reason what you learn in the end is something entirely different then you could have ever anticipated.

I only mention it because writing this blogg and performing stand-up had many similar benefits.

Comedy made me a stronger storyteller because it taught me about timing, pace, confidence, and most of all it made me acutely aware of when people were listening and when they were not.

Similarly, blogging has made me a better writer because it’s allowed me to collect my daily thoughts and translate them in an efficient, concise and honest manor. And because you, the reader, have followed along through the year, commenting, sometimes harshly and sometimes with praise, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t work.

And as an aspiring writer being able to write is not nearly as important as knowing what to write.

So to my readers, I wanted to say thank you.
