Blade Behind Bars
In the movie U.S. Marshals, Wesley Snipes plays a fugitive that is on the run from the U.S. Marshal, played by Tommy Lee Jones. In the end Wesley gets captured and is sent to jail.
Call it life imitating art, that Wesley Snipes who has stared in over 40 films was tried and convicted this past Thursday for tax evasion, and must surrender himself to the U.S. Marshals before going to jail.
I don’t blame Wesley for not wanting to pay his taxes. Nobody actually wants to pay their taxes. Especially when you know that the money that you worked so hard to make is spent on things you don’t believe in like the war in Iraq.
Unfortunately, the tax system is an inefficient machine and we don’t get the benefit of picking and choosing where our money gets spent. But overall more good comes out of our tax dollars then not.
Taxes pay for the police and fire departments, bridges, roads, schools, state parks, and ironically the very courts that convicted Wesley Snipes.
Taxes are what makes it possible to sit back on Sunday afternoon and enjoy the day without fear of being raped and pillaged in your own home.
It’s a fundamental right that we all pay for, and considering the average American only makes thirty-seven thousand, it’s that much more disgusting that someone like Wesley Snipes who makes over ten million a film refuses to pay his dues.
So Wesley, have fun in jail.
