Don’t Count My Vote

vote.jpg

I waited on line. Punched the ballot. And now I already regret my vote. I am a registered republican. I wanted to vote for McCain but I couldn’t vote for Palin. And no matter how hard I tried to convince myself to do it, I couldn’t bring myself to it. So I did what I suspect the majority of this country did, and I voted for Barack Obama, and I already regret it.

I regret it because I should have voted for Bob Barr, Alan Keyes, Ralph Nadar or any of the other Independent candidates that are on the ballot. California is not a battleground state. It is already going to Obama. Which means my vote doesn’t matter.

But if I had voted for and Independent candidate, then I would have been truly voting for what this country represents, the independent voice. The one that says our country isn’t defined by the two party system. That the Ross Perot’s of the world can be heard. That independent thought is not dead. If I had voted for neither Obama nor McCain, I would have been insuring that in future elections, those voices would continue to be heard.

But I didn’t, I drank the coolaid. And now I regret it.

One Observation for “November 4th, 2008”

  1. I voted GDI or Gamma Delta Iota or God Damn Independent! That way I can choose who I want to vote for. But, like you I know in the end my vote doesn’t really count. Casting my votes is more of a feel good event that says, I voted for whom I thought I wanted. In the presidential race even if the popular vote where to be so close as to a few votes, it would not matter. Why? Because the electoral college would decide regardless of what the popular outcome was. So in reality change the title to “My Vote Doesn’t Count”!

As for the rest, Senate, Congress, etc….okay the vote counts but only toward choosing which overly paid, corrupt, asshole will win. And when they win….we get to pay for them to have a nice little pension plan that they can live high on the hog for the rest of their days. Plus the extra added bonus of special interest groups lining their pockets with even more money.

So who won? Not us, not you, and definitely not me! I get to continue to be overtaxed and underpaid so some fat cat in Washington can retire a happy person. Am I bitter? Not really. Do I care? Of course but it would require all the koolaid drinkers to stop drinking the koolaid and start giving half a damn. I honestly don’t think that will happen anytime soon. Maybe Washington will screw things up so completely that people will actually do something?

But as long as the electricity flows, the cable TV is working, you can get gasoline for under $4, and porn on the Internet is free - it’s gonna be a very long time before anything gets fixed.
