Just Another Day In California
It’s 10 am. I’m hiding under my desk, curled up in a little ball clutching my knees. According to the news, The Big One just hit. The earth won’t stop shaking. Sirens are blaring. Firefighters with chainsaws and shovels are breaking through plastered walls looking for victims. There’s a gas leak. The power is out. Another building just collapsed. The death toll is rising.
The girl in the office next to me thinks I’m crazy. She changes the channel on my television. CNN. There is no earthquake. It’s just a drill. A statewide exercise to prepare Californians for the 7.8 temblor that scientist believe will strike in the next hundred years.
I almost wish that it would just hit already. That an earthquake would come and demolish the entire city so that we could stop worrying about the big one. Earthquake Predictions. Earthquake weather. And emergency evacuation plans.
I mean seriously, don’t we have enough to worry about?
