Me & George

I’m not one who typically compares myself to people I don’t admire or respect. Few people would. I want to see myself as something other than myself. So I look to people I emulate, people who have succeeded where I continue to fail.

But the truth is that you can’t always be what you set out to become. And sometimes in the process of striving to become something greater, we ironically become the very thing we fought against.

I only mention it because George W. Bush and I have a lot in common. But if you had asked me that a year ago, I would have scoffed and cited a thousand differences between us. Chief amongst them would be the fact that he’s a born again Christian. And I’m a self hating Jew who believes that all religion is nothing but a sham to control the masses.

But in an exercise in diplomacy, I set out to find common ground between our 43rd President and myself.

We both know all the words to the pledge of allegiance. Believe that Braveheart was the greatest movie ever made. Credit “The Cat in The Hat” as one of our favorite books. And when it comes to eating, we both agree that there’s nothing better than down home Texas bbq.

But of all our similarities, probably the most striking is the fact that George and I only have 100 days left. For him it’s his final 100 days in office. And for me it’s 100 days of observations.

And for that I’ve never been so thankful to be like George.
