Not Just A Legend

In Washington Irving’s short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane is a school teacher who falls in love with a farmer’s daughter, but when she rejects his marriage proposal, he becomes distraught, and leaves her house only to encounter the legendary Headless Horseman. At the story’s end, no one knows for certain if Ichabod has been killed by the horseman or if he has simply fled the town in shame, but one thing is clear, he was never seen from again.

That is until yesterday.

Yesterday marked the 133rd running of the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. The race began with 12 horses, the overwhelming favorite was the Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, and from the start he didn’t disappoint.

But if you read my post on Friday, picking the favorite is easy, picking who will come in second or third is where you make your money.

As the 12 horses came down the backstretch, the 20 to 1 longshot, Ichabod Crane who had never been in a race this big before, shot from the back of the pack to claim the third place prize, and made my prediction for the race come true.

I guess some legends never die.
