The Year

britney-spears-101.JPG A lot of things happened this year. Michael Phelps won eight gold medals. Heath Ledger died. Anna Nicole Smith overdosed. OJ Simpson went to jail. R. Kelly was acquitted. Jamie Lynn Spears got knocked up. Jessica Alba became a mother. Elliot Spitzer had sex with a hooker. John Edwards cheated on his wife. And Sarah Palin became the first hockey mom to run for Vice President. 400 Mormon kids were taken from their home. Clark Rockefeller turned out not to be a Rockefeller and 400 Mormon kids were returned to their homes. President Bush had a shoe thrown at his head. Hilary Clinton lost her bid to become president. John McCain lost the election and Barack Obama became the first black president. But this year’s 365 Award goes to Britney Spears.

It was a year full of train wreck mishaps, tragic deaths, and inspiring stories. Barack Obama certainly moved the nation, empowered the masses, and gave hope for the future. But in an odd and uncomfortable way so did Britney Spears.

Her personal meltdown and career implosion played out in tabloids for the entire world to see. She shaved her head, locked herself in a bathroom, was committed to the Psych Ward, had her children taken away, and performed like she was on drugs at the MTV Music Awards. But then she did something else, she changed.

A year after the meltdown first began she is now back in shape, she recorded a new album, it shot to number one worldwide, and her concerts are sold out.

And while I love to bash Britney for being a white trash pop star that I know she is, I have to admit, at this moment, she is a testament to the belief that no matter what happens in our lives, we can recover, carry on, and still live out our dreams.

Of course it also helps to have a good publicist.
