White Trash Therapy
When Britney Spears was strapped to a gurney, wheeled into the hospital’s psych ward, and placed on suicide watch, I have to say I wasn’t completely surprised. I mean seriously, the 26-year-old, uneducated, world-renowned pop icon was destined to implode.
The only question was who would be there when it happened? Personally, my money wasn’t on Dr. Phil but that’s probably because I underestimated the depths the TV shrink would sink to exploit a tragedy for his own personal gain.
Unlike Oprah, Ellen, or even Jerry Springer whose guests voluntarily air out their dirty laundry; guests of the Dr. Phil show are emotionally vulnerable individuals seeking a medical cure to their problems.
But therapy isn’t about pulling a rabbit out of a hat because real problems can’t be solved in an hour of commercial interrupted TV. It takes months if not years to sort through underlying issues that are inevitably at the root of the problem.
Of course, you wouldn’t know that by watching Dr. Phil.
